Datacom snaps up AWS award for work with Victorian Government

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Datacom's efforts to help Australia's Victorian Government consolidate its IT infrastructure have earned an award at the AWS Global Public Sector Partner Awards.

“Every year we are impressed by how our partners continue to innovate using cloud technology, helping their customers raise the bar on mission success, and this year is no different,” explains AWS' Worldwide Public Sector Partners and Programs vice president Sandy Carter.

“The 2021 AWS Public Sector Partner award winners display a sincere commitment to impact the lives of our customers around the globe."

Datacom picked up the Global Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network Public Sector Partner Award alongside the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water, and Planning (DELWP).

Last year DELWP sought to consolidate Victoria's climate change, emergency management, energy, environment, forest, water and planning functions into a single department to ‘maximise connections between the environment, community, industry, and economy'.

As part of this consolidation, DELWP needed to bolster its infrastructure resiliency and its existing applications that supported Victoria's critical emergency structure.

Together, Datacom and DELWP worked together to analyse the current strategy, IT plan, and the state of the department's architecture.  Datacom employed the skills of a cross-functional team comprised of cloud, DevOps, developers, and project management staff to work collaboratively across the project.

Datacom Australia managing director Alexandra Coates says that DELWP achieved 60% savings by migrating to AWS.

DELWP also reports improving service availability through multi-site disaster recovery capabilities, cost savings across Oracle Database, automation through infrastructure as code, zero trust security, and improved remote access for its users.

DELWP's ICT Delivery Information Services director Joe Serra says, “To provide expertise in designing highly reliable, available services using AWS, Datacom worked to assess the existing DELWP environment and recommended an approach, foundation and governance model to accelerate DELWP's desired outcomes.

“Together we have improved service availability for the Department's critical infrastructure and reduced the cost of services whilst doing so.

Datacom is both an AWS Managed Service Partner and Migration Competency Partner. The company works across Australia and New Zealand to provide many ICT services, including AWS migrations.

Datacom was also recently named Genetec 2020 Partner of the Year.

At the time of the award, Genetec Australia and New Zealand country manager George Moawad commented,  “Now we are working more closely with our partners, it's even more rewarding to be able to recognise their hard work across the region.

"Together we are enjoying the benefits of our new direct relationship, enabling us to better understand the challenges our users face, deliver better value and ensure we can swiftly bring innovative and locally relevant solutions to New Zealand and Australia.
