QNAP NAS OS integrates MS Office for Web

28 May 2020

QNAP Systems, a computing, networking and storage solution provider, has collaborated with Microsoft to integrate Office for the web into QTS, the QNAP NAS operating system.

With this new feature, QTS users can right-click on Office documents and select “Edit with Office Online” to facilitate direct editing of Microsoft Office documents in the web browser.

Office for the web is Microsoft’s free online service that enables viewing and editing of Microsoft Office documents, including Word documents, Excel worksheets, and PowerPoint presentations, in a web interface.

QNAP NAS users with proper document access permissions can quickly and easily launch Office for the web in the same browser window, boosting productivity and streamlining workflow.

“The integration of Microsoft Office for the web into QTS allows quick viewing and intuitive editing of Office documents in web browsers for higher work efficiency and providing more conveniences to users,” says QNAP product manager Josh Chen.

QNAP NAS users can enjoy this add-on feature at no additional cost starting from QTS 4.4.1.

An Internet connection is required to launch Office for the web in QTS.

Microsoft Office continues to be one of the most commonly used software suites in the world.

As live collaboration becomes a vital aspect for many organisations and freelancers, this move will provide an edge to those looking for a secure and reliable way to manage documents within a private cloud.

QNAP has recently released two new quad-core NAS models, one for home and personal use, and one aimed at the SMB market.

The home-focused TS-x31K NAS comes in 1-bay, 2,bay, and 4-bay models, all of which are powered by a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor. They also feature 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM, SATA 6 Gb/s, and AES-256 bit encryption.

Additionally, the 1-bay model includes one gigabit LAN (GbE) port; while the 2-bay and 4-bay models include two GBE ports.

The SMB TS-431KX NAS includes 10GbE SFP+ connectivity to provide high bandwidth for intensive data transmission.

It supports Snapshot technology and HBS (Hybrid Backup Sync) local, offsite and cloud backup that enables a well-rounded disaster recovery plan to ensure uninterrupted services.

The quad-core 1.7 GHz processor comes with 2GB RAM and is upgradable to 8 GB, with one 10GbE SFP+ and two 1GbE network ports.

Both feature tool-less and lockable drive bays for ensuring that all hard drives in the NAS remain secure.
