Veeam garners 'visionaries' status in enterprise backup software
Thu, 9th Jul 2015
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Gartner has positioned Veeam in the ‘visionaries' quadrant of the 2015 Magic Quadrant for enterprise backup software and integrated appliances.

The accolade is the third consecutive placement for Veeam in the visionaries quadrant, which Gartner says denotes companies that are ‘forward-thinking, advancing their portfolio capabilities ahead of the market, but their overall execution (often scalability or breadth of functionality and/or platform support) has not propelled them into being challengers or possibly leaders'.

Ratmir Timashev, Veeam chief executive, says the vendor considers its advancement along both completeness of vision and ability to execute axes in this year's quadrant as testament to its continued innovation and increased market share.

“As Gartner states, the backup/recovery software and integrated appliance market comprises dozens, if not hundreds, of vendors, this report narrows it down to those that have strong presence worldwide in the upper-end midmarket and large-enterprise environments',” Ratmir says.

He says the upcoming general availability of Veeam Availability Suite v9 later this year will continue to strengthen Veeam's presence in the enterprise.

Gartner says Veeam has been recognised by customers as the leading VM backup vendor in the market, ‘mostly due to its product simplicity, reliability and integration into VM management UIs, and partly due to a replication function included in the same product'.

The analyst firm says although most major competitors have caught up on some advanced functions, such as standing up new VMs from the backup repository, ‘Veeam has maintained its competitive edge with its popular distinctive functions, such as the Veeam Explorer series and Snapshot Hunter'.

Only one other vendor – Actifio – made it into the visionaries quadrant. HP was listed as the only challenger, with EMC, Commvault, IBM and Symantec listed as leaders. The niche quadrant was more crowded, with Barracuda Networks, Unitrends, Arcserve, Dell, Asigra, Seagate, Acronis and FalconStor.
