Amazon & prpl partner to enhance software deployment

Today

A collaboration between Amazon Web Services and the prpl Foundation's Life-Cycle Management engine aims to simplify the deployment and management of software on customer premises equipment.

This integration leverages AWS IoT Greengrass, a managed service facilitating the building, deploying, and managing of software for edge devices, alongside the prpl LCM engine to offer open-source, edge-managed services to manufacturers of customer premises equipment (CPE). According to the organisations, this will enable users to utilise significant applications such as motion sensing and fall detection, thereby enhancing their quality of life.

Dr. Leonard Dauphinee, President of the prpl Foundation, said, "With prpl LCM and AWS IoT Greengrass, we are providing a new way for developers to efficiently deploy and manage software for edge devices." He further acknowledged the longstanding support of AWS within the prpl community, noting, "AWS has been a key supporter of the prpl community, and AWS services have proven to be a driver for accelerating value-added applications and services."

The integration offers significant advancements through the use of prplOS, an open-source enterprise-grade software framework, which powers the latest WiFi routers and gateways. By utilising prpl LCM, developers are able to create containerised environments on CPE, which enhances security and ensures isolation. AWS IoT Greengrass, paired with prpl LCM, allows for frequent deployment and updates of new software applications within these containers.

AWS IoT Greengrass provides an open-source edge runtime and cloud service that facilitates software orchestration across extensive fleets of devices and containers, thereby expediting the application development process. The technology enables devices to collect and analyse data closer to where it is generated, respond autonomously to local events, and perform predictive analyses using machine learning models trained in the cloud.

The successful implementation of this technology integration was demonstrated on the prpl Reference Platform from MaxLinear, another member of the prpl Foundation. It highlighted the straightforward deployment and execution of software updates particularly for applications focused on security monitoring.

This development was also presented at the prpl Global Summit in Paris, where the emphasis was placed on how prpl and AWS are facilitating faster time-to-market for rapid deployments on CPE. The integration showcases the combined efforts to enhance software management capabilities by leveraging prpl's open-source initiatives and AWS's edge-computing solutions.
