Appian boosts AI, scalability & security in latest platform update

Thu, 21st Aug 2025

Appian has announced a range of updates to its process automation platform, focusing on greater AI capabilities, improved scalability, and enhanced security features for enterprise and public sector users.

AI smart search

The platform's AI-powered smart search now delivers results based on semantic understanding, which means it interprets user intent rather than relying solely on keyword matching. This function is enhanced by integration with Appian's data fabric, allowing users to access and search across millions of data records and documents in connected systems.

The semantic search trains on the context of queries to facilitate improved relevance in user queries, related case matching, and intelligent agent actions, responding directly to business needs as they arise.

All AI features developed by Appian are now available for self-managed and FedRAMP-compliant environments. This extension provides all customers, including those in tightly regulated sectors such as government, with secure access to the AI functions required for enterprise activities.

"We've improved our quoting, claims, and underwriting processes through AI-powered process optimisation. Using Process HQ to identify bottlenecks and drive continuous improvement, powered by Appian's generative AI capabilities, I see tremendous opportunity to help us continue delivering on our strategic plans," said Sheila Evans, Chief Product and Solutions Officer at MagMutual.

Data fabric autoscaling

The latest software release includes autoscaling for Appian's data fabric, which compiles data from disparate enterprise systems into a single, accessible model. With autoscaling, high-intensity data queries can be managed automatically, allowing organisations to respond to higher workloads as their data needs grow while minimising administrative overhead. According to the company, this streamlines application development and reduces operational risk, particularly for larger deployments.

An added feature is asynchronous interface loading, which speeds up user experience by rendering essential application data first. Large or complex datasets are loaded in the background, aiming to increase the responsiveness of applications built on the Appian platform regardless of their complexity or data load.

Process HQ integration

Updates to the Process HQ analytics module allow users to embed real-time reports and dashboards directly into Appian Sites - secure portals for deploying workflow applications. This design aims to enable easier access to performance insights for non-technical users without reliance on IT departments for report distribution or dashboard configuration.

Additionally, configurable drilldown reports allow staff to investigate process metrics and performance data with a single click, facilitating closer examination of process health or organisational trends directly from their working interfaces.

"This release makes it easier for all organisations, including our government customers, to securely leverage enterprise-grade AI," said Michael Beckley, CTO, Appian. "We're delivering AI with guardrails and transparency, without compromising on security or control."

Appian's approach involves integrating AI into core business processes so that automated tasks are governed consistently, with a thorough focus on security and accountability. The enhancements announced also emphasise making value delivery through AI more practicable for all users, regardless of the organisational context or regulatory requirements.
