Austroads wins data impact award for national NEVDIS

Austroads has won a 2026 Qlik ANZ Regional Data Impact Award for its National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System.
The award recognises work that improves data outcomes across Australia and New Zealand.
Managed by Austroads for road agencies in both countries, NEVDIS is a national platform for sharing vehicle and driver information between jurisdictions. It supports the exchange of data used in regulation, enforcement and consumer services.
Authorities use the platform to securely access vehicle and driver records across borders. The system supports activities aimed at keeping communities safe, improving oversight of vehicles and drivers, and assisting law enforcement agencies.
It also underpins services used by car buyers and others checking a vehicle's status. These include Personal Property Securities Register checks, which can show whether a used vehicle has money owing on it, has been written off or has been reported stolen.
The award category highlights organisations using data to improve decision-making and outcomes for governments, industry and the public. In this case, the recognition focused on a long-running system that brings together information from multiple jurisdictions into a shared national source.
National system
NEVDIS gives governments, industry and authorised organisations access to consistent and timely information. That model helps improve transparency, supports policy and operational decisions, and strengthens service delivery across jurisdictional boundaries.
Matthew Brunsdon, Chief Data and Technology Officer at Austroads, said the award reflected the role of shared datasets in public services.
"We are delighted to receive this recognition, which reflects the important role NEVDIS plays in supporting safer roads, trusted services and informed decision-making across Australia," Brunsdon said.
He also pointed to the importance of cooperation between participating agencies.
"The true value of NEVDIS comes from collaboration. By bringing together vehicle and driver information from multiple jurisdictions into a trusted national system, we are able to support services and outcomes that would not be possible through individual datasets alone," Brunsdon said.
Shared data
The system has become part of the back-end infrastructure for several public and commercial processes linked to vehicles and licensing. By allowing participating jurisdictions to draw on a common pool of trusted information, it reduces the need for fragmented checks across separate state and national records.
That shared structure also has implications for policy and administration. Consistent access to data can help agencies compare records, identify issues and process transactions more efficiently when dealing with drivers and vehicles that move across borders.
Austroads described the award as recognition of the jurisdictions and partners involved in building and maintaining the platform. Its value depends on sustained cooperation between multiple agencies rather than any single dataset.
