Couchbase unveils AI edge upgrades with offline sync & JavaScript

Tue, 18th Nov 2025

Couchbase has announced new developments in its mobile platform designed to support AI-powered applications running on edge devices, particularly in environments with unreliable or no internet connectivity. The enhancements provide support for JavaScript in Couchbase Lite, improved peer-to-peer synchronisation, and greater resilience across multiple regions for mobile deployments.

JavaScript support

Support for JavaScript in Couchbase Lite allows developers to embed the Couchbase database within web browsers. This enables the creation of offline-first web applications that can operate independently from the internet, synchronising data across mobile, web, desktop, and custom hardware platforms once connectivity is restored. Couchbase aims for this approach to offer greater flexibility and uniformity for cross-device application deployments.

Peer-to-peer sync

The platform's peer-to-peer data synchronisation now features device auto-discovery and mesh support that automatically adapts as devices enter or leave a network. These capabilities are designed to maintain data consistency amongst devices, even outside of traditional network coverage, making edge collaboration more viable. Additional upcoming network auto-switching and Bluetooth support aim to further reduce disruptions for users moving between different network environments.

Deployment resilience

Enhanced deployment options are available through Capella App Services and Sync Gateway 4.0. These updates include support for cross data centre replication (XDCR) for mobile, allowing active standby, seamless failover across regions, and broader disaster recovery provisions. Mobile users can migrate between clusters without service interruption, addressing concerns about downtime in global deployments.

Application examples

Aptos, a provider of commerce solutions for retailers, is one organisation using Couchbase to support point-of-sale platforms. Couchbase Capella underpins its Aptos ONE retail platform, providing a flexible and reliable transaction service architecture.

"Reliable data synchronization from cloud to retail store devices is essential for our customers, who need applications that always work, regardless of internet availability. Couchbase Mobile's peer-to-peer replication capabilities allow us to provide the always-on experience retailers demand with low TCO. Moving to Capella delivered over $1 million in annual savings while reducing our infrastructure footprint from 12 deployments with 100+ nodes to a single deployment with 31 nodes," said John Carney, VP, Head of Architecture, Aptos.

Unified architecture

Enterprises have long faced challenges with managing end-to-end data synchronisation when building AI applications for mobile devices. Cloud-only solutions are dependent on network availability, risking revenue and productivity during outages, while mobile-only databases generally require additional integration with back-end servers. Couchbase says its unified approach, bringing together cloud-to-edge data management within its mobile platform, eliminates this integration complexity and lowers the total cost of ownership.

Edge environments

The company has also launched the Couchbase Edge Server, a lightweight solution for running database services in resource-constrained environments. This server is positioned for scenarios with frequent offline operation, such as in airplanes, warehouses, and remote retail outlets. Edge Server is intended to extend Couchbase's data synchronisation capabilities across more isolated or physically distributed points of business operation.

Market sentiment

An increasing number of business and IT professionals are prioritising edge technologies to maintain service reliability and continuity in diverse operational conditions, according to research by Forrester. Couchbase's positioning is to provide end-to-end data synchronisation and resilience for AI applications at the edge, supporting customers across sectors including retail and logistics.

"Building AI-powered applications for the edge means being able to deliver fast, personalized and always-available experiences, even in completely disconnected environments. The latest enhancements to Couchbase Mobile help developers build and ship applications faster, and ensure architects provide continuous uptime no matter what," said Matt McDonough, SVP of Product, Couchbase.
