'Data Never Sleeps': Domo's annual report reveals escalating online activity
With data permeating every aspect of our digital lives, the 11th annual edition of 'Data Never Sleeps', released by Domo, provides a unique insight into the escalating dynamics of digital engagement.
Over the past decade, the cloud-based business intelligence and data analytics platform has traced mounting activity across numerous online platforms, illustrating the formidable volume of data generated on the internet every minute.
Josh James, Founder and CEO of Domo, said, "This year's findings reflect the ever-changing and fast-paced digital landscape, which has only been heightened by the rapid popularity of AI models such as ChatGPT."
"Data drives everything we do, from a quick search online or sending an email to checking the latest headlines on our way to work. Data Never Sleeps, now in its eleventh year, depicts just how much we rely on data and its impact on our daily lives in one of the 525,600 minutes in a year."
Indeed, AI platforms such as ChatGPT are found to be driving significant changes, with users now sending 6,944 prompts every minute. Yet, it is also noted that internet users still heavily rely on established modes of digital interaction, with more than 6.3 million Google searches happening every minute.
Besides search habits, the DNS 11.0 report highlights the increasing digital engagement in the entertainment industry. Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has seen an upturn in activity, as users post 360,000 tweets every minute.
Music streaming platforms are also continuously popular, with Spotify pulling 24,000 hours of content every minute, including the play of 69,444 Taylor Swift songs. Instagram users can be seen sending over 694,000 'reels' via direct message every minute, while a whopping 40 years of streaming content is watched every 60 seconds. This clearly emphasises the extraordinary impact and reliance on digital platforms for entertainment purposes.
Concurrently, the volume of digital transactions continues to surge. Data shows Amazon making sales amounting to more than USD $455,000 per minute and Venmo users sending USD $463,768 worth of payments during the same time span.
Food delivery platforms also show a massive increase from the previous year, with DoorDash orders totalling USD $122,785 per minute, a hike of 60% from the previous year. This data gives an account of the growing dependence on digital platforms for various transactions.
However, the increased digital activities also pose cybersecurity challenges. The report mentions 30 DDoS attacks being launched by cybercriminals every minute, thus reinforcing the importance of robust security measures for online users.
Josh James concluded by underlining the veracity captured by the DNS report, stating, "Data weaves the fabric of our digital lives, and our annual Data Never Sleeps report highlights some of the most meaningful data for businesses and consumers alike."
