Firmus Technologies adds Mike Ferraro to Board amid AI growth push
Firmus Technologies has appointed Mike Ferraro as a Non-Executive Director to its Board, aligning with the company's move into a new phase of commercial growth. Ferraro's experience spans executive leadership in the resources, manufacturing, legal, and banking sectors, with particular emphasis on governance and strategy for large-scale industrial businesses.
Board changes
The addition of Ferraro comes as Firmus Technologies prepares for the departure of Nick Curtis and Ted Pretty, who will step down from the Board at the end of the month. Both directors have been recognised for guiding the company from research and development through to its current operational scale.
"Nick and Ted provided highly valuable experience and perspective as directors throughout our first stages of growth. The Company thanks them for this contribution and for establishing a firm foundation of good corporate governance practice," said Tim Rosenfield, Co-CEO, Firmus Technologies.
Depth of experience
Ferraro has held prominent roles, including Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Alumina Limited and Chief Legal Counsel at BHP Billiton. His background features extensive involvement in joint ventures, significant transactions, regulatory matters, corporate governance, and cross-border business strategy. He has also served as Chair of the Australian Aluminium Council and been a member of Manufacturing Australia, where he worked with industry and government on policy issues affecting the sector.
Sector perspective
Ferraro's appointment is set to support Firmus Technologies as it navigates new challenges in the artificial intelligence and technology sectors. He brings insight into the energy and resource requirements faced by companies operating at industrial scale.
"What drew me to Firmus is the calibre of the team and the scale of what's being built. This is a company coming into its own - growing quickly, manufacturing unique technology, and solving problems that matter on a national and global level," said Ferraro.
Industrial challenges
With artificial intelligence infrastructure forming an increasingly significant part of industrial energy demand, Ferraro noted the changing regulatory and policy landscape. He pointed to the similarities between traditional heavy industry and AI as major energy users.
"AI infrastructure is the new energy intensive industry. My goal is to bring judgement and perspective from the energy and policy world to help Firmus navigate its next chapter and anticipate the issues ahead," said Ferraro.
Industry transformation
Ferraro highlighted the need for clear governance and strategic direction as artificial intelligence technologies become more deeply integrated into the broader economy. He reflected on his experience leading businesses through substantial change across multiple industries.
"I've spent my career advising and leading businesses through periods of transformation. My focus here is to bring judgement and perspective, help anticipate the road ahead, and support the executive team in building something that endures," said Ferraro.
He also commented on the prospects for the underlying technology being developed at Firmus: AI is here to stay and can only get better. It's going to take up a lot of space in our lives, both personal and professional, and I'm energised by the opportunity to contribute to a company that's helping shape that future.
