Flinders University & Sennheiser launch hi-tech Adelaide campus

Thu, 9th May 2024

Flinders University and Sennheiser have joined forces to create an innovative eight-floor City Campus located in Adelaide. The collaboration puts advanced Sennheiser technology at the heart of the intuitive design, improving the educational environment and promoting modern, interactive teaching methods. Key Sennheiser technology incorporated into the design includes TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphones, SpeechLine Digital Wireless, lapel mics, and Control Cockpit software.

The integration of Sennheiser technology represents an upgrade from past communication systems and sets the stage for novel approaches to teaching in modern educational institutions. Traditional lecture theatres have been revitalised and transformed into active, agile spaces that enhance both physical and digital connectivity. Unifying Sennheiser tech and modern teaching methods, each room is made more accessible with user-friendly stations.

Flinders University's Senior IDS Technical Lead Leigh Hoppenbrouwers says, "All our rooms are designed to be collaborative and flexible, and we have one code base. It means that teaching can happen in any location, and the lecturer will be confident of their ability to work within those spaces." The ability to adapt teaching spaces to suit different activities and to recreate experiences such as a courtroom scenario is made possible by the incorporated technology.

In the lecture spaces, Flinders University utilises a combination of TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphones and SpeechLine Digital Wireless handheld and lapel microphones. The far-reaching effects of deploying the Sennheiser technology is explained by Leigh Hoppenbrouwers, "We're using Sennheiser's TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphones for lecture capture and for the far-end participants on web conferencing. The TCC 2 units mean our lecturers can walk the room and retain crystal clear audio for lecture capture."

Daniel Rowe, the Business Development Manager at Sennheiser, highlighted the company's years of technical experience and expertise in audio technology. The integrated technology supports Flinders University's innovative pedagogical approach, enabling seamless audio coverage throughout their spaces.

The boardroom at Flinders University also pushes technological boundaries and promotes high-level collaboration. Olie Taylor, Service Delivery Manager from the firm Diversified, provided details of the audio setup, highlighting the efficiency of the TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphones which ensure superior positional tracking for the auto-tracking system.

The boardroom audio setup combined with the use of powerful Sennheiser's SpeechLine Digital Wireless system in Flinder University's lecture halls has resulted in a notable improvement in audio technology for education. Each room features four SL DW channels—two handheld and two lapel microphones—designed to enhance voice clarity, aiding effectual communication in learning situations.

The integration of Sennheiser's Control Cockpit software has a critical role in efficiently managing complex audio systems. Paul Raphael, Sales Manager at Sennheiser, discusses the crucial role this tool plays, "Control Cockpit is the configuration and monitoring layer that sits alongside SL DW and TCC2. This tool enables the team to deploy, manage, and monitor everything from a central location."

The tailored audio solutions at Flinders University have led to significant improvements in the teaching and learning experience, according to a statement from the organisation. They write, the continuation of the successful working relationship between Flinders University and Sennheiser is possible through their shared dedication to providing high-quality audio solutions that meet the evolving needs of educational institutions.
