Geotab unveils AI dash cam to boost fleet safety in Australia

Tue, 16th Sep 2025

Geotab has announced the launch of its GO Focus Plus AI dash cam and video intelligence platform to assist fleet managers and drivers in addressing risky driving behaviour.

The GO Focus Plus is a dual-facing dash cam that provides real-time, in-cab verbal coaching, aiming to help drivers self-correct issues like tailgating and phone use. Results from a large pilot showed that this approach led to a 90% reduction in tailgating and a 95% decrease in phone use among participating drivers. The system's alerts are designed to serve as immediate coaching moments with the goal of reducing accidents and improving overall fleet safety culture.

The deployment of this technology follows a challenging period for road safety in Australia. According to the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics, 1,329 road deaths were recorded from June 2024 to June 2025 across the country, which represents a 3.3% increase compared to the previous 12 months.

A recent survey by Geotab highlighted growing concerns among commercial drivers about accident rates. Thirty-four percent of respondents indicated they had considered leaving their profession in the prior year. The industry faces ongoing difficulties, including long working hours, variable road conditions, stress, and reputational concerns for drivers and companies alike, while fleet managers navigate the dual challenge of controlling costs and ensuring safety.

Commenting on the current state of the sector, Fernando Ferreira, Associate Vice President, Safety Solutions, Asia Pacific and Latin America at Geotab, said:

"The transport industry is under pressure like never before. From driver shortages to rising costs and increasing safety risks, fleets are being stretched on all sides. Drivers are also facing huge challenges - long hours, unpredictable conditions and sometimes unfair blame when incidents occur. Our new video intelligence platform is designed to make things easier, not harder, by delivering proactive coaching and practical insights right when they're needed most. It's a big step towards safer fleets, healthier drivers, and building confidence behind the wheel, which ultimately benefits everyone on the road."

Sean Killen, Vice President, Global Markets at Geotab, expanded on how the technology is intended to encourage a more supportive safety culture across fleets:

"Fleets don't just need more data, they need smarter ways to use it. With the GO Focus Plus AI dash cam, we're combining Geotab's connected vehicle insights with intelligent, in-cab coaching to give drivers instant support exactly when they need it. At the same time, fleet managers get the tools to foster a culture of safety that feels supportive rather than punitive, turning every alert into an opportunity for learning. This is about more than technology - it's about making sure every driver gets home safe at the end of the day, while helping businesses stay resilient and competitive in a challenging industry."

The GO Focus Plus provides instant, voice-based alerts when the AI detects high-risk behaviours such as distracted driving or tailgating. This allows drivers to adjust their actions in real time. For managers, the AI-driven system highlights the most urgent risks and repeat patterns, focusing their attention on priority issues without the need to manually review extensive video footage. Each alert generated includes contextual data to enable targeted follow-up and coaching.

The platform integrates with MyGeotab, which streamlines the process of assigning training, monitoring progress, and recognising improvements, thereby reinforcing a culture of safety within fleets.

Geotab reports that its video intelligence platform is set to evolve further, with its AI models improving detection and coaching over time through ongoing updates. The system's open architecture has been designed to support additional camera models and new capabilities in the future.

This new product launch marks a development in Geotab's ongoing efforts to leverage data and video analytics to provide a complete overview of operational risk and enable continuous improvement for fleet operators.
