IWD 2023: Igniting Your inner drive - How to unlock high performance

Wed, 8th Mar 2023
FYI, this story is more than a year old

High performance doesn't necessarily mean operating at the topmost level of your field. It's about accomplishing your objectives and functioning at your personal best. As a former water polo player for the National team and Olympic Gold medallist, and now coach to the National junior women's team, I have come to understand that high performance can be attained in any setting. The skills I've acquired as an athlete, coach, and employee have prepared me for my current role as General Manager of BrainStorm Software. Regardless of our end goal, it's the actions we take to reach it that truly count.

How to Ignite your drive

Over the years, I have ignited my drive by relying heavily on mindfulness and perspective-shifting. I've found that by consciously reframing my current situation and visualising where I want to be, I am able to maintain a strong sense of motivation and direction. Setting goals and creating a vision for my future self has also been instrumental in keeping my drive alive. By having a clear picture of where I want to go, I am constantly reminded of what I am working towards and am able to stay focused and motivated, even during challenging times.

What would be your recommendation for others?

Incorporate mindfulness practices into their daily routine. By practising mindfulness, individuals can develop a greater sense of self-awareness and focus, which can help them reframe their current situation and set clear goals for the future.

Additionally, setting specific, achievable goals and creating a clear vision of one's desired future can help maintain motivation and drive towards achieving high performance. Finally, it can be helpful to consistently reassess and adjust one's goals and actions to ensure they align with their vision and are moving them towards high performance.

Creating the right mindset

Many of us are guilty of being our own worst enemies, holding ourselves back from achieving our goals and aspirations. Often, when faced with a challenge or obstacle, we hear ourselves saying "I can't" before we've even attempted to overcome it. In these moments, it's important to pause and ask ourselves why we're feeling this way. By taking a closer look at our thoughts and feelings, we can identify the root cause of our self-doubt and start to reframe it.

For example, let's say you're struggling to afford a house. Rather than accepting defeat and telling yourself, "I can't afford a house," ask yourself why. Maybe you don't currently have enough money or earn enough income, or perhaps the housing market is particularly expensive in your area. Whatever the reason, it's important to recognise what is within your control and take action towards achieving your goal.

Instead of focusing on what you can't do, try reframing your thoughts and beliefs. Ask yourself what steps you can take today to start moving towards owning the house of your dreams. With a bit of creativity and determination, you might be surprised at what you're capable of achieving. By believing in yourself and your ability to overcome obstacles, you can break free from self-imposed limitations and reach new heights of success.

Hard work will get you there

While hard work is undoubtedly important, I believe the key to getting the most out of ourselves is to take action and believe. If we constantly tell ourselves that things are hard work, we're likely to find that everything feels difficult and overwhelming. Instead, I recommend focusing on our goals, purpose, and vision. When we are aligned with these things, we're more likely to experience a sense of flow and momentum that carries us forward towards success.

To put this into practice, I suggest setting clear goals and creating a vision for your desired future. By having a clear picture of where you want to go, you can better focus your efforts and stay motivated even when things get tough. Additionally, it's important to take action towards your goals, even if it means taking small steps or making incremental progress. By consistently taking action, you'll build momentum and make steady progress towards your goals.

Finally, it's essential to believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals. While there will inevitably be setbacks and obstacles along the way, maintaining a sense of confidence and self-belief can help you overcome these challenges and stay focused on your vision. By taking action, staying aligned with your goals, and believing in yourself, you can tap into your full potential and achieve the success you desire.

Conclusion

In conclusion, achieving our dreams requires both belief in ourselves and the ability to take action. By focusing on our goals, purpose, and vision, and reframing negative self-talk, we can develop a sense of confidence and self-belief that fuels our motivation and helps us overcome obstacles. At the same time, it's crucial to take consistent action towards our goals, even if progress is slow or incremental. Through sustained effort and perseverance, we can build momentum and tap into our full potential to achieve the success we desire. Ultimately, believing in ourselves and taking action requires a willingness to challenge ourselves, step out of our comfort zones, and embrace the uncertainty and risk that comes with pursuing our dreams. But with dedication, effort, and a clear vision, we can turn our aspirations into reality and create a life that is aligned with our deepest values and purpose.
