Medow Health AI secures AUD $3m to expand doctor automation
Medow Health AI has secured AUD $3 million in new funding as it continues to expand its artificial intelligence-based automation of medical reports for specialist doctors. Several of the country's senior clinicians have backed the company for a second time, building on its growth in Australia and new international markets.
Doctor backing
The funding round drew support from key specialists who invested in an earlier round. Backers include Professor Michael Boyer, chief executive officer and oncologist at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, orthopedic surgeon Michael Solomon and eye surgeon Dr Johnny Wu. All three are also advisors to the company. They have witnessed the technology's effects on reducing administrative burdens for doctors and cutting wait times for patients.
Business growth
Over the past year, Medow Health AI's revenues have increased by 300%. The company reports that its AI solution processes more than 100,000 specialist medical consultations every month, particularly in private practice settings. It also recently completed a pilot programme at a leading Australian hospital.
Personal origins
Founder and Co-Founder Joel Freiberg developed the company following his own experiences as a patient with Crohn's disease. After facing frequent delays in seeing specialists and organising referrals, Freiberg saw an opportunity to improve efficiency. He said the idea also stemmed from observing the paperwork faced by his father, a respiratory physician, each evening after clinical work.
Use of funds
The company aims to use the fresh capital to accelerate product development, broaden adoption of its AI tools within specialist medical communities, and deepen integration with major healthcare IT systems.
"The capital raise will enable us to launch new AI products to specialist medical communities across the country, increase integrations into key healthcare systems and see us through to profitability within 12 months," said Joel Freiberg, Co-Founder, Medow Health AI.
Systems integration
The company emphasises its focus on connecting its tools with existing hospital software. "Where others only focus on AI we use our engineering talent to integrate with key medical systems, recently launching a tailored hospital product for meditech powered Chris O'Brien Lifehouse," said Freiberg.
Freiberg also cited a partnership with Magentus, which began nearly three years ago, as important to the company's approach to interoperability and integration. Integrations have so far included Meditech and Genie software, with more planned.
International expansion
Following an earlier funding round that raised AUD $2 million, Medow Health AI expanded into New Zealand and South East Asia, reporting strong uptake in both areas. The company provides its technology to help automate medical report generation, which can often be a time-consuming element of clinical practice.
Investor perspectives
Both the latest and previous funding rounds were led by doctors who have already used the company's technology in their own practices. Freiberg said this direct involvement from frontline users was central to Medow Health AI's approach. "We didn't have to look far for investors for both the initial and second round capital raise with our early medical specialist customers already using the technology wanting to be involved," said Freiberg.
"Our shared commitment to supporting specialist doctors, enhancing their operational excellence and improving patient outcomes, has the potential to redefine the standard of care across Australia's medical community."
