Milestone updates XProtect & Arcules to boost cloud security
Milestone Systems has released updates to its XProtect video management software and Arcules video surveillance platform, introducing features designed to improve cloud integration, operational intelligence, and system management for security professionals.
The latest version of XProtect, titled 2025 R3, introduces XProtect Remote Manager. This new capability allows security teams to monitor and manage surveillance systems from remote locations, with the aim of maintaining system health and proactively addressing issues before they disrupt day-to-day operations. With these tools, security administrators are able to detect and resolve problems such as full databases or server failures without requiring physical access to the site.
Event-based notifications offer further support by alerting teams via customised email notifications whenever cameras, servers, or related components undergo status changes. These alerts cover a range of system elements, including recording servers, hosts, sites, services, devices, and camera hardware, enabling quicker response and system maintenance.
XProtect access control
XProtect's updated video permissions management now provides more granular control for site owners, who can precisely define which users are permitted to view specific cameras. This refinement in permission settings aims to reduce the risk of unauthorised access to video feeds and is intended to support compliance and data privacy objectives.
The release also introduces Role-based Access Control Permissions for integrated access control systems. This functionality lets administrators restrict visibility and operation of access control units directly by user role within the XProtect platform, removing the need for separate logins associated with third-party access control systems. The integration aims to streamline security management by offering a unified interface to oversee multiple systems.
Arcules enhancements
Alongside updates to XProtect, the Arcules cloud platform also receives new features, focusing on faster investigations and greater reliability. The addition of Multi-Camera Forensic Video Search allows users to analyse footage drawn from multiple camera sources in a single interface. Security teams can track movement or reconstruct incidents by reviewing recordings from several angles simultaneously, which provides utility for use cases such as campus security or emergency response scenarios.
Dual-Layer Motion Detection is included to help ensure events are not missed. By combining Arcules' own video analytics and on-camera motion detection, this system aims to capture all relevant motion events. Recordings can be stored either in the cloud or on edge gateways, and this feature operates with ONVIF M and T standard cameras across both cloud-based and gateway deployments.
Device compatibility has also been broadened with the Extended Camera-to-Cloud Compatibility feature, which expands support to cameras with limited internal memory. This development is designed to make cloud video surveillance more accessible for organisations that require lower-cost devices while retaining cloud functionality and deployment options.
Security teams and authorised users can securely and temporarily share video evidence via the new External Case Sharing feature. Through secure links that do not require recipients to have an Arcules account, legal professionals, law enforcement, and third-party investigators can access the shared Cases, with the system automatically revoking access once the set permissions expire.
Security management objectives
Milestone Systems stated that these updates are aimed at addressing challenges in security operations by making surveillance systems more intelligent, accessible, and manageable, while maintaining the flexibility of an open platform. The company said, "The latest releases for XProtect VMS and Arcules VSaaS address the real-world challenges facing security professionals by making surveillance systems more intelligent, accessible, and easier to manage while maintaining the open-platform flexibility that has made Milestone a trusted partner worldwide."
"XProtect Remote Manager introduces new comprehensive monitoring and management capabilities that enable security teams to maintain system health and respond to issues before they impact operations, eliminating time-consuming site visits."
New features across XProtect and Arcules include smarter search tools, enhanced detection systems, improved system monitoring, and secure collaboration options. The enhancements are intended to enable organisations to better protect people, assets, and business operations by providing reliable and flexible security management solutions.
