Motorola debuts AI devices for hazardous environments

Tue, 1st Apr 2025

Motorola Solutions has introduced a new range of AI-enabled devices designed for hazardous environments, including sectors such as oil and gas and ports.

The newly launched Pelco range comes in the wake of Motorola's recent acquisition of a company by the same name. This expanded portfolio consists of fixed cameras, ruggedised and long-range cameras, smart sensors, and AI analytics, all of which integrate smoothly with third-party video management systems.

The Pelco brand aims to enhance security operations by providing AI-powered solutions that are effective across a broad array of environmental conditions. Corporate Vice President of Pelco, Hamish Dobson, stated, "Pelco provides security operators with robust AI-powered security solutions capable of performing across a wide range of environmental conditions. We've purposefully created Pelco to combine rugged hardware, state-of-the-art sensing and AI-powered analytics for a VMS-agnostic device portfolio that is driving higher standards in critical infrastructure security."

The transformation of Pelco's camera line has more than doubled its offerings since Motorola Solutions took charge of engineering and design. The brand now benefits from a modernised new Pelco mark, integrating security technologies from acquisitions such as Videotec, IP Video, and Silent Sentinel.

The portfolio's expansion opens additional growth avenues for enterprises and critical infrastructure sectors including transportation, aviation, maritime, and utilities. These industries are frequently exposed to extreme weather conditions, corrosive elements, and other hazards that would typically affect conventional security devices.

The newly introduced specialised portfolio features include the Esprit Anti-Corrosion cameras, designed to withstand the rigorous oceanic elements encountered in maritime environments. Also included is the ExSite Enhanced Thermal 2 fixed camera, providing thermal imaging in hazardous locations like power plants with certification for explosion-proof standards worldwide.

The portfolio also presents the Halo Smart Sensor, a sophisticated intelligent sensor delivering non-video security, thus maintaining privacy through functions such as detecting vaping, gunshots, unusual noises, motion, and triggering keywords like "help." The Aeron and Jaegar cameras are capable of long-distance detection, up to 20 miles, under challenging conditions often found in military, aviation, and critical infrastructure.

Pelco devices operate in conjunction with Elevate, a cloud-based camera support platform. This platform evaluates camera health while extending sensing capabilities through AI implemented in the cloud.

The devices are also engineered to comply with Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) standards, facilitating installation and integration while reducing the need for expensive system alterations. Additionally, Pelco IP cameras adhere to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Section 889, which governs secure equipment procurement.
