Sunshine Hydro appoints ex-NZ Climate Minister as strategic advisor
Sunshine Hydro has appointed Hon. James Shaw, New Zealand's former Climate Change Minister, as a Strategic Advisor. Shaw brings to the table extensive experience from his tenure in government, as well as a background in management consulting, sustainability, and business leadership.
Shaw served as New Zealand's Minister of Climate Change for six years under Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dame Jacinda Ardern. His parliamentary career spanned a decade from 2014 to 2024, during which he co-led the Green Party for nine years. His appointment is expected to bolster Sunshine Hydro's efforts in transitioning towards full commercial operation.
"I am delighted to support Sunshine Hydro in its mission of decarbonising the energy system," Shaw expressed. "Sunshine Hydro brings the ingenuity and capacity we need to become world leaders in addressing the massive environmental challenges we face."
In addition to his political career, Shaw is currently an Operating Partner at Morrison, a global infrastructure investment management company. He also holds positions on the Board of WWF New Zealand and plays governance and advisory roles with various climate change-related businesses and NGOs.
Rick McElhinney, CEO of Sunshine Hydro, highlighted Shaw's strategic vision and environmental experience as key assets. "James' guidance will contribute substantially to our broader goal of creating a sustainable future where all energy is renewable generated and nothing is wasted. We welcome his strategic vision, environmental experience and look forward to rapidly scaling with his support."
This move aligns with Sunshine Hydro's ongoing growth strategy, which aims to position the company as a leading voice in environmental stewardship. The announcement also coincides with their latest A-round capital raise, in which they have already secured USD $20 million of the USD $40 million target.
