WA Police enhance Apple CarPlay with ANPR technology
The Western Australia Police Force has broadened its collaboration with Motorola Solutions by integrating automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) capabilities into its Apple CarPlay systems.
This extension means that over 80 police vehicles are now equipped with the PSCore mobile app's functionality, enabling real-time alerts and voice notifications when vehicles of interest are detected by ANPR systems. WA Police Superintendent Dean Snashall stated, "Real-time ANPR data helps to ensure that front-line officers are more aware of potential risks and able to make better decisions." He added, "This latest evolution of Motorola Solutions' PSCore application helps our officers to document incidents faster and more accurately, freeing more of their time to protect our communities."
The decision to incorporate ANPR via the PSCore app within Apple CarPlay aims to streamline the technology in use without the need for additional hardware such as screens and brackets. Snashall noted the simplicity of the deployment, highlighting how it aids in faster and better-informed investigations across the state.
WA Police Force's digital policing strategy centres on leveraging technology to enhance productivity and safety for both officers and the public. The PSCore app, now deployed across more than 6,000 mobile devices within the force, consolidates crucial operational information from multiple systems into a cohesive and intuitive interface. Snashall underscored the app as a cornerstone in improving incident awareness.
The app's extended capabilities also bolster response efforts across a spectrum of incidents, notably in addressing family violence cases. The PSCore app has automated the publication of family violence reports to the Department of Communities in real-time. This development facilitates quicker referrals to support agencies for victims, providing critical support while police officers are present at the scene.
