ABBYY has launched PHOENIX Plus, a generative AI layer for its Vantage document processing platform aimed at organisations using automation to handle business documents.

Built into Vantage, the new layer is designed to improve how software extracts and interprets information from complex files, including documents with varied formats, handwritten content and unstructured text. It turns documents into structured data for use in automated workflows and AI systems.

The launch comes as companies try to deploy AI agents more widely across back-office tasks while still struggling with the variability of contracts, forms and other operational records. Document handling remains a constraint for many automation projects because systems must first read and classify information accurately before acting on it.

PHOENIX Plus is part of ABBYY's broader PHOENIX portfolio, which combines deterministic AI tools with generative models. Within that structure, PHOENIX Core provides the optical character recognition, layout analysis, classification and extraction functions that have long underpinned the company's document software. PHOENIX Plus adds generative AI for less predictable document types and more interpretive tasks.

One intended use is zero-shot extraction for unseen or highly variable documents, where users define the output they need through prompts rather than labelled training data. This could apply to files such as supplier contracts, where layout, language and clause structure differ widely and often require manual review before important information can be pulled into compliance or contract management systems.

The software also supports tasks beyond extraction, including interpreting free-form text, identifying inconsistencies and producing recommendations for downstream decisions. Those features are designed to sit alongside existing validation rules, confidence thresholds, human review processes and source traceability within Vantage.

Hybrid approach

ABBYY is positioning the product around a hybrid model, arguing that deterministic techniques remain important where consistency and precision are required, while generative AI is better suited to ambiguity and reasoning. That framing reflects a broader trend in enterprise software, where suppliers are trying to blend large language models with established automation tools rather than replace them outright.

PHOENIX Plus is hosted by ABBYY and keeps customer data within the same region as the user's Vantage data. Customers can buy the software as an add-on to their Vantage subscription for a fixed annual fee, rather than entering a separate contract with a model provider or managing token-based billing.

At the same time, users can still connect Vantage to external model providers through a bring-your-own-model option. ABBYY named OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and Mistral among the services that can be connected this way, alongside custom large language model links.

Customer example

ABBYY cited a logistics customer that used PHOENIX Plus and generative AI to read and extract handwritten and printed text from complex forms. According to the company, the deployment achieved 99% first-pass accuracy.

That figure highlights the commercial pressure on software vendors to show measurable gains from adding generative AI to established products. Businesses weighing automation projects have often been cautious about relying on large language models in document-heavy processes because errors can create compliance, operational and financial risks.

Bruce Orcutt, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at ABBYY, said the product was built to address that concern. "Enterprises today want the benefits of generative AI in their document workflows but require the compliance and auditability that enterprise-grade technology provides," Orcutt said. "PHOENIX Plus was built specifically to close that gap. Providing a model that works inside your existing Vantage pipeline and is managed entirely by ABBYY, PHOENIX Plus is the GenAI layer that enterprises want with the predictability and control that production automation demands."

PHOENIX Plus is now available to select Vantage customers.
