AI data boom revealed in Domo's new Data Never Sleeps study
Domo has announced a special edition of its annual Data Never Sleeps (DNS) study, focusing on the substantial amount of artificial intelligence (AI) data generated every 60 seconds globally and its effects on daily life. This AI Edition uncovers how AI impacts both businesses and consumers worldwide, highlighting the growing prevalence and significance of AI technologies.
For over ten years, Domo has tracked global data usage, illustrating significant increases in activity across various digital platforms. The Data Never Sleeps: AI Edition now brings attention to the new era of AI, presenting detailed insights into the frequent and extensive use of AI technologies. Ben Schein, Senior Vice President of Product at Domo, commented, "When ChatGPT brought large language models (LLMs) into the spotlight, it opened everyone's eyes to just how impactful AI can be. We've seen a flood of AI applications emerge as a result."
The report reveals several significant figures pertaining to AI activity. For instance, every 60 seconds, USD $293,000 is spent globally on AI. In terms of creative output, 19,028 images are generated, with 1,389 of these created using Dall-E 2 alone. Additionally, 1 deep fake occurs every minute, 467,000 employee hours are saved by utilising ChatGPT, and 35 new cars with hands-free automation are sold. The cooling systems for ChatGPT's supercomputers require 185 gallons of water, while 7,431 minutes of AI-generated video are produced, and ChatGPT itself is prompted 6,944 times.
"Domo has reported on data volumes for over a decade and the way AI has impacted data creation rivals that of the early days of social media platforms," added Schein. "This special AI edition gives a glimpse at just how much volume we're seeing in this AI boom."
The report also addresses the varying applications of AI, highlighting both its benefits and potential drawbacks. AI is being used for myriad purposes, from designing and driving to more general automation tasks. Each minute, Dall-E 2 generates a significant number of images, contributing to the overall 19,028 images created by various text-to-image platforms. Moreover, 7,431 minutes of AI-generated video are produced every minute globally.
AI's ability to automate tasks results in substantial time savings. Employees worldwide save approximately 467,882 hours of work every minute by using ChatGPT. However, there are also less commendable applications of AI, such as academic dishonesty; 52 college papers are flagged for AI plagiarism on Turnitin every minute.
Using AI comes at a cost, both financially and environmentally. Schein pointed out that "nothing is free, especially when it comes to technology, where $293,000 is spent on AI every minute." The environmental impact is also notable, with up to 185 gallons of water required to cool the supercomputers running ChatGPT.
In summarising the report, Schein said, "The data highlights the various ways AI is impacting all facets of life, from simple to complex tasks, and the resources it takes to support its computing power. We're just in the beginning of this new era and with our own customers using Domo.AI, we're experiencing firsthand the power that AI and data bring to unlocking business impact."
