Australian unis launch MortarCAPS to modernise IT

Today

Australia's higher education sector has launched the MortarCAPS Data Standard, a new initiative spearheaded by CAUDIT to address the challenges of outdated IT systems.

Developed in collaboration with more than 20 Australian higher learning institutions, including universities and TAFEs, this not-for-profit initiative aims to unify data frameworks across institutions. This will help unlock more flexible learning pathways, boost operational efficiency, and enhance personalised student support, positioning the sector for a future-focused education landscape.

The initiative is based on CAUDIT's Higher Education Reference Model (HERM), which has been adopted by over 1,000 institutions globally. By creating a unified framework, the MortarCAPS Data Standard intends to address issues related to legacy systems, enable smoother integration of SaaS platforms, and lower the costs associated with adopting emerging technologies.

Greg Sawyer, CEO of CAUDIT, stated, "Building on the global adoption of the CAUDIT Higher Education Reference Model, this initiative simplifies complex data environments, improves compliance, and streamlines integration. With 20+ higher learning institutions and international collaboration already in place, MortarCAPS addresses the sector's most critical needs."

Key benefits of the MortarCAPS Data Standard include enhanced cybersecurity by reducing vulnerabilities across systems, streamlined integration processes allowing easier adoption of new technologies, and improvements in student experience. This is expected to support personalised learning and facilitate smoother academic transitions.

The MortarCAPS Data Standard also aims to support national priorities such as the National Skills Passport by enabling seamless credentialing and workforce mobility solutions.

Navitas, a global provider of education pathways, is the first to adopt the MortarCAPS Data Standard. The company is aligning its integration layer with the standard to ensure seamless transitions for students moving from Navitas courses to partner universities, thus supporting a cohesive and enhanced learning journey.

Charlsey Pearce, CEO of MortarCAPS, commented, "This marks a monumental shift for higher learning. The CAUDIT-endorsed MortarCAPS data standard will enable institutions to work smarter, deliver improved student experiences, and integrate with emerging technologies seamlessly."

Kyle Dunsire, Founder of Ingenuity Partners and Architecture Principal for MortarCAPS, elaborated on its significance, "MortarCAPS provides the foundation, and we aim for it to help reduce friction and cost when implementing technology, speeding up an institution's ability to embrace the coming wave of technological changes and better meet the needs of students."
