HONOR has launched the Magic 8 Pro smartphone in Australia, priced at AUD $1,999.

The release marks another step in HONOR's push into the local handset market following its return to Australian retail channels. The phone will be sold through JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and The Good Guys.

The Magic 8 Pro is positioned as a flagship focused on photography and on-device artificial intelligence. It features a 200MP telephoto camera, a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera, along with image-editing tools including AI Eraser, AI Outpainting, AI Colour and AI Cutout.

The telephoto camera uses a 1/1.4-inch sensor, an f/2.6 aperture, optical image stabilisation and 3.7x optical zoom. HONOR says the setup is designed to improve low-light photography and long-distance image capture, while its AI Adaptive Stabilisation Model aims to make zoomed shots steadier without extra equipment.

The handset also includes a dedicated AI button. Users can double-press it to open the camera when the phone is locked, while a long press brings up on-screen suggestions and tools including Summary and AI Deepfake Detection.

AI focus

Artificial intelligence runs through much of the device's software. Running MagicOS 10, based on Android 16, the phone is designed to interpret on-screen content, respond to natural language commands and carry out actions within system settings.

The Magic 8 Pro comes with Google Gemini pre-installed for text, voice and image-based assistance. It also includes AI Deepfake Detection and AI Voice Cloning Detection, which aim to identify manipulated video and audio during calls and other conversations.

These features reflect a broader shift across the smartphone sector, as manufacturers try to differentiate premium models through AI tools while hardware advances become more incremental. Camera software, fraud detection and assistant features are becoming more prominent areas of competition at the top end of the market.

For performance, the handset uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform. It also includes what HONOR describes as the industry's first GPU-NPU heterogeneous AI super-resolution and frame-generation system, aimed at improving graphics quality and frame rates in mobile games.

According to HONOR, some open-world titles that previously ran at 60fps and 850p could reach 120fps at 1080p on the new system. As with many manufacturer gaming claims, real-world results are likely to depend on software support, thermal conditions and individual titles.

Battery and display

The Magic 8 Pro has a 7,100mAh silicon-carbon battery, placing it among the larger battery offerings in the premium smartphone segment. It supports 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging, although charging accessories are sold separately.

The display includes eye-comfort features such as AI Defocus Display, Dynamic Dimming, Circular Polarised Display 2.0, Circadian Night Display and 4320Hz PWM dimming. These are intended to reduce flicker and make prolonged viewing more comfortable during work, browsing and entertainment.

MagicOS 10 also expands the device's cross-platform file-sharing and switching features. Users can transfer files between Android, iOS, macOS and Windows devices through HONOR Share, and people moving from an iPhone can bring across contacts, calendars, photos, notes and reminders.

Retail push

The Australian release comes as smartphone vendors seek growth through premium models at a time when replacement cycles remain extended and consumers are holding on to devices for longer. In that environment, brands are leaning on higher-end cameras, AI-led software and battery life to justify flagship prices.

HONOR is offering the Magic 8 Pro in Sunrise Gold, Sky Cyan and Midnight Black. Buyers during the initial sales period will also receive a bonus HONOR Watch 4 Pro, which has a recommended retail value of AUD $499.

The local launch gives HONOR a more visible presence in a market where Apple and Samsung continue to dominate premium smartphone sales, and where Chinese brands have often competed more aggressively on price than on flagship positioning.
