Intuit QuickBooks launches AI agents to boost SME efficiency
Intuit QuickBooks has launched a suite of artificial intelligence agents for Australian small and medium-sized businesses, providing automation for key financial and operational workflows within its platform.
Virtual automation
The suite comprises multiple AI agents designed to cover distinct business operations. These include agents for accounting, finance, customer management, projects, and GST compliance. The AI agents perform tasks such as automating bookkeeping, streamlining transaction categorisation, surfacing financial summaries, and assisting with client follow-ups. According to Intuit, the agents are intended to work in tandem with human experts to deliver what it calls 'done-for-you' experiences within the QuickBooks platform. Each agent aims to reduce repetitive work and enable more seamless collaboration between businesses and their accounting professionals.
Platform redesign
Alongside the AI agents, QuickBooks has introduced a redesigned online interface. The new homepage features customisable widgets and a business feed displaying real-time insights and summarised workflows. Users can connect to other Intuit products and external applications from this unified dashboard. This interface is built to support AI-powered workflows, highlighting the shift towards integrated solutions for small business users. The company states that these updates aim to improve efficiency and support business owners in focusing on strategic work instead of administrative obligations.
Impact on business productivity
Intuit has released research indicating that operational inefficiency is having a significant financial impact on Australian small businesses. The report, titled The Growth Gap, identifies up to AUD $35 billion in unrealised growth opportunity, caused by fragmented systems and decision fatigue. The study surveyed 1,200 business leaders and found that on average, business leaders lose two days per month switching between multiple tools. Additionally, half of Australian business leaders report being continually involved in daily operations, with a third stating that important decisions are delayed by the need for their personal approval. The research estimated that mid-sized businesses (with up to 99 staff) could each be missing out on an average of AUD $660,000 to AUD $685,000 in annual revenue due to these factors. Early adopters of AI are already seeing benefits, with up to six hours saved per week and increased delegation efficiency.
User feedback
"We are experiencing a once-in-a-generation shift where AI is fundamentally reshaping how businesses run and grow. We believe inefficiency is the hidden tax on growth, draining potential from businesses across Australia," said Suzy Nicoletti, Regional Vice President APAC, Intuit.
The accounting agent operates by automating daily bookkeeping, categorising transactions, and spotting anomalies, while a soon-to-be-released GST agent will assist users with compliance by detecting differences between profit-and-loss statements and GST reports. The customer agent manages leads, drafts communications, and tracks interactions through the sales cycle. The projects agent accelerates onboarding by autofilling project details, reducing manual entry. The finance agent delivers summaries on cash flow, profit and loss, and balance sheets in real time.
Intuit's Senior Vice-President for International, Ciarán Quilty, stated, "Ambition is abundant, but the path to execution remains obstructed by everyday complexity. The challenge isn't ambition itself, but the systems required to turn it into progress. When routine work is automated, time and visibility returns - giving leaders the insights they need, and the confidence to act with conviction."
Sonal Patel, founder of Shilu's Vegetarian and a QuickBooks user, commented, "As a growing business with both an online shop and stockists across Australia, we were constantly battling paperwork and GST compliance. Intuit's new AI agents on QuickBooks are a game-changer. The Accounting Agent handles the daily bookkeeping and categorisation, and the upcoming GST AI Agent will ensure we stay compliant without the usual headache. This automation saves us crucial time we can now spend on creating new recipes, not on spreadsheets."
