OpenAI launches Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work & Codex

OpenAI has introduced an Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex. It is designed to let administrators manage workspace activity and settings from a single conversation.

The plugin brings together analytics, access controls and supported administrative actions that would otherwise be spread across separate tools. Administrators can ask questions about workspace activity, review the underlying detail, make authorised changes and confirm the result within ChatGPT Work or Codex.

It covers a range of routine tasks. Administrators can review adoption and credit usage across ChatGPT Work and Codex, monitor when members or groups are nearing credit limits, add or remove users, update groups, and handle onboarding or offboarding.

It also includes permission management. Users with the appropriate rights can review effective permissions, investigate access issues, and control feature or model access by role or group.

Another part of the tool focuses on spending and usage requests. Administrators can adjust limits for members, groups and workspaces, then review, approve or reject requests with current usage data alongside them.

Workflow automation

OpenAI is also positioning the plugin as a way to automate recurring administrative work without bespoke software development. The system can handle repeated checks and high-volume requests while leaving administrators in charge of approvals and exceptions.

Examples include routing pending usage requests into Slack or Microsoft Teams, where authorised reviewers can approve or deny them directly from those platforms. The plugin can also monitor requests for feature access and automatically grant them when they meet predefined conditions, while passing exceptions on for review.

Each workflow is intended to confirm when a requested change has been applied. Administrators remain subject to the same workspace policies, approval rules and permissions already in place.

Existing controls

The plugin does not widen a user's access. Instead, it operates within the role and permissions already assigned to that administrator and maps requests to supported read or write actions before returning a structured result.

In effect, the underlying controls available through the Admin Console are exposed through ChatGPT Work and Codex as permission-aware tools. Administrators can see what they asked for, whether the action was completed and what changed, with broader-impact actions available for review before they are applied.

The launch reflects a wider push across workplace software to shift administrative work into conversational interfaces. Software groups have increasingly sought to combine reporting, permissions and workflow actions in the same environment to reduce context switching for managers and internal operations teams.

OpenAI also used the launch to outline how its own IT organisation uses ChatGPT Work and Codex. According to the company, the Admin plugin has changed the starting point for workspace administration by allowing the IT team to ask questions directly, drill into data, and generate reports or insights from the same interface.

A broader set of internal workflows supports that approach. In Slack, a ChatGPT Work agent handles employee IT requests, triages and actions support tickets, retrieves context, checks approved policies, completes supported tasks and escalates exceptions where needed.

OpenAI said these deployed workflows resolved about 45% of ticket volume at the time of reporting. It also said ChatGPT Work allowed support ticket data and history to be turned into operational health dashboards, giving the IT team continuous visibility into service performance.

That visibility helped eliminate a backlog and reshaped how the team planned its work even as support volume roughly doubled. OpenAI described the system as a shift from reactive service management to using live operational data to set priorities and anticipate demand.

OpenAI attributed part of that shift to the link between insight and action inside the same interface.

"The value is far beyond faster reporting. The Admin plugin connects the question to the next supported action, whether that is checking someone's effective permissions, updating a group, changing a usage limit, or reviewing a spending request. It gives admins a faster way to understand what is happening and take action, while preserving the same permissions and controls we already use," said Kunal Malik, Head of Global IT at OpenAI.
