Smartsheet & Snowflake launch data migration plan template
Smartsheet and Snowflake have collaborated to introduce a new project plan template aimed at easing the process of migrating large, complex data sets to the Snowflake platform.
The two companies announced the creation of the Spark migrations to Snowflake template, which they describe as a structured approach designed to help organisations manage data migration projects more efficiently and with reduced risk.
According to Brandon Seiter, Senior Director of Corporate Development at Smartsheet, and Tim Jones, Senior Regional Vice President, Solution Innovation at Snowflake, migration projects present significant challenges for organisations, including ensuring data integrity, security, maintaining business continuity, minimising downtime, and avoiding data loss.
They stated, "Migration projects can be daunting for organisations. Moving data from one system to another involves complexities such as data integrity, security, and minimising downtime. Ensuring compatibility between systems, avoiding data loss, and maintaining business continuity are critical challenges. Proper planning, testing, and execution are key to a smooth transition. A well-structured migration project plan and strategy can help reduce risks, improve efficiency, and unlock new capabilities."
The partnership seeks to address these issues by combining Smartsheet's expertise in enterprise work management with Snowflake's capabilities in cloud-based data storage.
They have jointly developed the migration project template, which contains foundational milestones, tasks, and best practices intended to guide customers through the process and help them transition smoothly to a new data environment. "Smartsheet and the Snowflake AI Data Cloud have partnered to tackle the work management challenges inherent in migration, combining our respective strengths in enterprise work management and cloud-based data storage."
"We've jointly developed a project plan template, Spark migrations to Snowflake, designed specifically to simplify and accelerate the migration of large, complex data sets. Our goal with this structured approach is to help organisations achieve a seamless transition to their new data environment," Seiter and Jones said.
The initial focus of the new template is to facilitate migration from Apache Spark to Snowpark in the Snowflake environment.
The companies note that Snowflake's scalability and ease of use are key factors attracting organisations to migrate their Spark workloads to the platform. The migration template is accessible from within Smartsheet's template gallery and comes with pre-built dashboards and reporting tools to help customers organise, track, and manage their migration processes.
"Snowflake's ease of use and ease of scale are key reasons organisations migrate their Apache Spark workloads to Snowflake — and in doing so, companies are saving tremendous amounts of time and human costs that they would otherwise be investing in maintenance and performance tuning. Customers can now access a co-developed project plan, along with pre-built dashboards and reporting, accessible from within Smartsheet's template gallery, to organise, track and manage their migrations."
"These templates will be available at no additional cost to existing Snowflake and Smartsheet customers. New Smartsheet users will be prompted to set up a free plan and will have 30 days to use the templates and assess their value, prior to subscribing to a paid Smartsheet plan," the statement reads.
The Spark migrations to Snowflake template serves as a blueprint for project management, offering proven practices and workflow recommendations. It also incorporates accelerators such as Snowflake's free code conversion tool, the Snowpark Migration Accelerator, which are available to customers at no cost.
"This Smartsheet-Snowflake project plan acts as a blueprint providing foundational milestones, tasks, and best practices so that customers can execute their migration with more confidence and speed," say Seiter and Jones.
The template can be customised to include automations at various scales, allowing teams to optimise their workflows and collaborate efficiently within the Smartsheet platform. Built-in reporting and dashboard features enable teams to monitor progress, keep track of status, and provide updates to stakeholders.
Seiter and Jones highlighted the value of a structured migration process by stating, "This jointly developed project plan template with Snowflake is another powerful example of how Smartsheet removes complexity so that customers can efficiently achieve their target outcomes such as migrations to Snowflake."
"With Smartsheet and Snowflake, customers now have a no-code, quick-to-implement project management solution to migrate data quickly, reliably and securely from Apache Spark to Snowpark. Access the template on the Smartsheet Template Gallery."
