Symbio launches AI-based Scam Shield to tackle scam calls

Symbio Holdings Limited, part of the Aussie Broadband Group, has introduced Scam Shield, an AI-driven system aimed at enhancing scam detection in voice and messaging services.

The newly launched Scam Shield by Symbio is designed to aid service providers with an additional layer of protection against fraudulent activities that may occur over the company's voice network. The AI-based platform will continuously analyse customer traffic, aiming to improve the detection and alerting mechanisms for suspected scam calls and messages.

Symbio has integrated learnings from its operations within various domestic markets and regulatory conditions to create this solution. While initially rolled out in Australia, there are plans to extend the service to Symbio's customers in New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The Scam Shield system leverages data analytics for scam prediction, providing customers with valuable insights and actionable data to bolster their existing scam detection efforts. Symbio's approach involves proactive mitigation strategies along with existing scam traceback procedures, facilitating a more comprehensive identification of scam traffic.

The solution has been engineered to comply with the Australian Industry Code C661:2022, which mandates telecom service providers to monitor their networks for potential scamming activities. Through applying AI technology, Scam Shield introduces an efficient data-based mechanism for timely scam detection.

According to Symbio, Scam Shield offers several key features. Customers will benefit from early alerts of potential scam threats, allowing for prompt action in investigations. The system is also self-learning, using customer feedback from traceback alerts to refine its ability to detect scams and support legitimate traffic. It aims to enhance safety by anticipating and identifying scam patterns more effectively, thereby reducing risks of such scams reaching wider audiences.

A trial phase involving a select set of customer traffic is beginning, aimed at refining the system's monitoring and scam detection capabilities further.

Dylan Brown, CEO of the Connect division of Symbio, stated, "We are working to improve how we identify and reduce scam traffic. We frequently engage with our customers to better understand their traffic and their use cases. We know that a large number of genuine business use cases have similar high-frequency, short-duration call patterns similar to scam traffic that may be blocked by other carriers. Symbio is focused on working with our customers to better fight scam traffic together, as a trusted partner in the Asia Pacific region."
