Trane Technologies has launched the LiquidStack CDU 2.X coolant distribution unit for AI data centres, designed to support current and emerging GPU platforms.

The product targets operators making cooling infrastructure decisions before finalising the computing hardware they will deploy, as rack densities rise and processor roadmaps continue to shift.

Liquid cooling demand

Liquid cooling is becoming a greater focus for the data centre industry as AI workloads push heat loads in server racks beyond the range typically handled by conventional air cooling. In this context, coolant distribution units have become central to liquid-cooled system design because they manage the flow of coolant between facility water systems and IT equipment.

Trane says the CDU 2.X uses a common design intended to work across different AI silicon platforms, including current systems and forthcoming products such as NVIDIA Vera Rubin. The unit has flow capability of up to 3,750 litres per minute at 3.5 bar.

According to Trane, the new unit can be configured for end-of-row and rack-adjacent deployment. It also offers options for control valves, power feeds and redundancy arrangements, allowing operators to align installations with different facility layouts and resilience requirements.

Flexible deployment

A key design goal is to limit the need for redesign when hardware plans change. That issue has become more pressing for data centre operators and developers that must commit to power and cooling infrastructure well before the final rack architecture is known.

Trane also says the CDU 2.X uses an ultra-low-harmonics variable frequency drive architecture designed to address harmonic distortion at the source. This can reduce the need for additional power-quality components and simplify system design.

Other specifications include support for facility inlet temperatures of up to 45C and lower approach temperatures, which Trane says can support efficient liquid cooling system layouts.

Expanded portfolio

The launch expands Trane's broader liquid cooling portfolio under the LiquidStack brand. The company recently made its GigaModular CDU platform commercially available with an expanded capacity of 14 MW, broadening its offer for operators building high-density AI infrastructure.

Scott Smith, General Manager of LiquidStack at Trane Technologies, said the new system is intended to address the pace of change in AI infrastructure planning.

"Operators need cooling infrastructure that can adapt as GPU platforms and rack densities evolve," said Scott Smith, General Manager of LiquidStack at Trane Technologies.

"CDU 2.X combines the performance and flexibility customers need today with the headroom to prepare for what comes next, allowing them to configure cooling around their facility and deployment strategy rather than designing the facility around the CDU," added Smith.

The LiquidStack CDU 2.X is available for pre-order, with shipments due to begin in the second quarter of 2027.
