VMware announced the appointment of David Bate to the role of vice president, Cloud, VMware Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ), effective immediately.

As vice president of cloud, Bate will be responsible for the VMware cloud business and go-to-market efforts across the APJ region.

He will lead the launch and roll-out of VMware Cloud on AWS, as well as the growth of the VMware Cloud Provider Program.

“Customers in APJ are excited about the opportunity VMware brings for them in their multi-cloud journey,” said Duncan Hewett, senior vice president and general manager, VMware Asia-Pacific and Japan.

“David's appointment will help us in driving growth with our VMware Cloud Provider Partners and VMware Cloud on AWS as we expand our reach in the industry.

Bate has more than 25 years of experience in the IT industry. He joins VMware from a multinational information technology firm, where he most recently served as vice president for Hybrid Cloud in Asia-Pacific.

Starting his career at Telecom New Zealand, Bate went on to hold several regional cloud computing and software leadership roles throughout his career.

“Customers in the APJ region are aggressively moving to a virtualized, multi-cloud computing model and are looking for solutions that will enable them to rapidly assemble, deploy, shift and manage workloads across their hybrid cloud environment,” said Bate.

“I am thrilled to take on the challenge of leading VMware's cloud business in APJ, and to work closely with clients as they embark on their cloud journeys.

Bate has a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng, Honors), Telecommunications and Control Systems from the University of Canterbury and a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), Management and Commercial Law from the Victoria University of Wellington.

He is currently based in VMware's APJ headquarters in Singapore.
