WesTrac expands training centre with $1m state boost

WesTrac has announced the upcoming completion of new facilities at its WesTrac Technology Training Centre in Collie, which will provide expanded training opportunities for the mining and construction sectors.

During a visit by the Premier of Western Australia, WesTrac CEO Jarvas Croome highlighted the support of the State Government in the project, with a contribution of AUD $1 million from the Collie Futures Industry Development Fund. "It is fantastic to have Hon Roger Cook MLA at the WesTrac Technology Training Centre to see the progress we have made with our expansion of this state-of-the-art facility," Croome remarked.

The training centre, noted as the only autonomous training centre in the Southern Hemisphere, focuses on practical training with machines like the Cat 789D Autonomous Haul Truck. "Demand for our world-class training has skyrocketed as mining and construction companies look to educate the next generation of their workforce," said Croome. He added that the expansion will ensure WesTrac's ability to meet the growing demand and offer new courses and pathways for workers in the resources and civil construction sectors.

Part of the expansion involves the construction of two new buildings, which will house five additional training rooms, a Virtual Reality room, a Remote Operating Station room, as well as reception and practical labs dedicated to Cat MineStar Technology training.

WesTrac is also commissioning a new Cat D10 Dozer, which features remote operating capabilities. This will enable students to operate the machine from a classroom some 500 metres away or even further, mirroring a typical mine site environment. Croome highlighted, "The new addition at the centre will replicate the latest technology available on a mine site which is designed to keep operators safe."

WesTrac's partnership with Caterpillar is seen as integral to its training programs. "WesTrac and Caterpillar are leading the charge when it comes to delivering world-class training by utilising the latest technology and equipment to provide a second-to-none level of education," explained Croome.

Since its opening in 2020, the centre has provided training to more than 900 individuals from both Australia and overseas. "We expect to see even more come through the door as industry demand increases for technology and electrification experts," Croome stated. He added, "The WesTrac Technology Training Centre and the team of experts who deliver our world-leading education and training are a beacon for the mining and construction industries as they look towards tech-driven operations of the future."

The project has also benefited from collaboration with the Motivation Foundation, which focuses on offering practical training and employment opportunities for young people. "Since commencing in Collie, Motivation Foundation have successfully helped over 50 local young people gain employment. Through our partnership with the Motivation Foundation and this expansion of the WesTrac Technology Training Centre, we hope to ensure this pathway continues for young people," Croome pointed out.

The training centre recently received recognition at the WA Training Awards, where WesTrac was named Large Employer of the Year for its significant contribution to education and training in the industry.
