National Australia Bank extends agreement with Amazon Web Services

Today

National Australia Bank (NAB) has extended its agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS), continuing its multi-cloud strategy aimed at enhancing its technology capabilities and improving customer experiences. This extended collaboration will see the bank further accelerate the migration of critical workloads to AWS infrastructure and advance its Generative AI (GenAI) capabilities, including automated code development and training.

NAB's Group Executive Technology and Enterprise Operations, Patrick Wright, highlighted the bank's substantial investment in technology to simplify and expedite customer services. "NAB is making banking simpler and faster by strengthening our digital technology capabilities to ensure we can provide our colleagues and customers with world-class banking experiences," Wright said.

Wright additionally commented on NAB's advancement in cloud adoption. "We are one of the most advanced banks in the world for cloud adoption. This approach is powering our ability to deliver new and improved services to market more quickly for our customers, with added reliability. We also recognise AWS's significant investments in highly secure and resilient global infrastructure to keep data safe, which NAB can leverage," he noted.

NAB has been leading in offering training opportunities to its staff. "We have been a leader in delivering the very best training opportunities to our people, crucial to ensuring we're supporting Australians with the skills they need for the future. Since we set out on this journey in 2018, more than 3,360 NAB colleagues are now AWS Certified Cloud 'Practitioners' and many other organisations have implemented cloud education mirrored on NAB's Tech Academy and Cloud Guild programs," Wright added.

AWS Director of Financial Services in Australia and New Zealand, Jamie Simon, expressed pride in AWS's collaboration with NAB. "NAB's expanded collaboration with AWS is a testament to the transformative power of cloud to differentiate their brand and customer offering. We're proud to help NAB's ongoing commitment to embracing innovation to elevate customer experiences, drive revenue growth, increase resiliency and security of its platforms, and adapt to regulatory requirements," Simon said.

Simon also discussed AWS's role in supporting NAB's GenAI program. "As the primary cloud provider for core NAB applications, including internet banking, NAB Connect as well as Simple Home Loans and the recent roll-out of Amazon Connect, we will continue collaborating with NAB to help shape the future of banking. I'm pleased to see NAB's strong outcomes from Amazon Q Developer, which rank among the best in the world, with the majority of its engineers seeing improved productivity when using the coding assistant, showcasing the tangible benefits of our collaboration," he remarked.

The collaboration includes support tools such as Amazon Q Developer for automated code generation. AWS has provided training to over 1,000 NAB technologists using this tool. NAB's ongoing effort in cloud adoption and training is evident from its transition of 84% of on-premises infrastructure to a public multi-cloud environment.

NAB's digital channels, including internet banking and the NAB Connect online business platform, as well as services like Simple Home Loans and the recent roll-out of AWS's omnichannel cloud contact centre service, Amazon Connect, are part of the services enabled by AWS.

This extension follows an initial agreement established in 2013, with a renewal in 2022, marking a significant step in continuously embedding NAB's multi-cloud approach.
