Q4 2024 report shows rise in tariff & agentic AI talks

Today

IoT Analytics has released new findings from their analysis of Q4 2024 earnings calls, highlighting discussions on tariffs, reshoring, and agentic AI among global companies.

The analysis is based on a comprehensive dataset from over 8,000 earnings calls across approximately 4,000 global companies listed in the U.S. during Q3 and Q4 2024. The emergence of tariffs as a significant topic marks the highest spike since Q3 2019 in CEO discussions. Reshoring and nearshoring also experienced notable increases, while agentic AI has become a trending subject. In contrast, topics such as generative AI and sustainability have seen a decline in mention.

Philipp Wegner, Principal Analyst at IoT Analytics, provided his insights into these findings. "The US election and potential tariffs were front and center during earnings calls in Q4 2024. While most executives emphasised that their companies are prepared for tariffs, conversations showed significant underlying concerns," he stated.

Key themes from the report indicate an upward trajectory in discussions related to tariffs, reshoring, and agentic AI. Mentions of AI have generally decreased, yet the specific topic of agentic AI has gained momentum in executive conversations.

Despite notable catastrophic events, such as hurricanes, flooding, and severe winter storms, the frequency of discussions surrounding sustainability has continued its downward trend. Since Q1 2022, there has been a consistent decrease in quarter-over-quarter sustainability dialogues.

The report shines a light on the shifting focus areas among global business leaders amidst varying economic and policy landscapes. The trends highlighted by IoT Analytics' analysis underscore the adaptive nature of company strategies in response to external factors.
