Rambus unveils Gen4 DDR5 tech boosting data rate to 7200 MT/s
Fri, 29th Dec 2023

The latest development in data performance technology has been announced by Rambus., a premier chip and silicon IP provider. The company revealed the availability of its groundbreaking Gen4 DDR5 Registering Clock Driver (RCD), a state-of-the-art mechanism capable of boosting the data rate to 7200 MT/s.

This marks a significant increase in memory bandwidth, up 50% from today's 4800 MT/s DDR5 module solutions. Testing of the Gen4 RCD began with major DDR5 memory module manufacturers during the final quarter of 2023.

The Gen4 RCD facilitates the swift progression of server main memory performance, adequately satisfying the demands of generative AI and various intricacies of advanced data centre workloads. The advanced functionalities make it a worthy tool in the face of growing demand for greater memory bandwidth, necessitated by exacting workloads such as generative AI.

Sean Fan, Chief Operating Officer at Rambus, outlined the importance of their latest innovation, saying: "With memory being an essential enabler of server performance, the need for greater memory bandwidth continues its meteoric rise driven by demanding workloads like generative AI."

He added, "The Rambus Gen4 DDR5 RCD is the latest demonstration of our commitment to providing leadership products ahead of the market need."

According to Shane Rau, VP, Computing Semiconductors at IDC, the swift pace of innovation in AI is leading advanced workloads, in turn, pressuring an accelerated development of new server platforms for data centres. He said, "DDR5 RCDs are critical to support the performance, power, and signal integrity required of RDIMMs in AI servers."

Rambus's DDR5 memory interface chips, encompassing the RCD, Serial Presence Detect (SPD) Hub and Temperature Sensors, play a vital role in achieving premium performance for leading-edge servers.

With over 30 years of advanced semiconductor experience, Rambus is nationally recognised for its signal integrity (SI) / power integrity (PI) expertise. This expertise is instrumental in the development of DDR5 memory interface chips, guaranteeing superior performance and reliability concerning data centre server RDIMMs.

The Rambus 7200 MT/s DDR5 RCD is available now. With a history rooted in advanced semiconductor experience spanning over 30 years, Rambus is recognised as a pioneer in high-performance memory subsystems.

Its mission is to address the communication bottleneck between memory and processing for data-intensive systems. Rambus innovation is critical in offering the increased bandwidth, capacity and security necessary for meeting global data needs and driving more comprehensive end-user experiences, whether in the cloud, at the edge, or in your hand, the company concludes.
