Sony has launched its 1000X THE COLLEXION headphones in Australia and New Zealand, alongside a Sandstone version of the WH-1000XM6.

The release adds a new model to Sony's 1000X audio range as the company marks 10 years since the series debuted with the MDR-1000X. 1000X THE COLLEXION is on sale now for AUD $999.95, while the WH-1000XM6 in Sandstone is priced at AUD $699.95.

The new headphones sit at the top end of Sony's current range, with an emphasis on materials, finish and comfort as well as sound. Available in Platinum and Black, they feature a metal headband with matte and gloss textures, faux leather developed over two years, and integrated buttons and microphone openings designed to keep the exterior clean.

Sony said the product was designed for longer listening sessions, using larger earcups, a wider cushioned headband and stretchable leather to improve fit and distribute weight more evenly.

Sound focus

Audio remains central to the launch. Sony said 1000X THE COLLEXION uses a bespoke driver unit with a soft edge and a high-rigidity dome made from unidirectional carbon composite material, intended to improve separation between instruments and vocals and widen the soundstage.

Sony also said it worked with Grammy award-winning and nominated mastering engineers on the tuning. The aim was smoother vocals, more balanced instruments and more detailed dynamics.

One of the more notable additions is DSEE Ultimate, which Sony said appears in a headphone for the first time. The feature uses Edge-AI to upscale compressed digital music files in real time in an attempt to restore lost detail and dynamic range.

Sony has also extended its 360 Reality Audio Upmix system in this model. Users can switch between music, cinema and gaming modes through a Listening Mode button.

Shared platform

For noise cancelling, the new headphones use the same platform as the WH-1000XM6, including Multi-Noise Sensor technology with 12 microphones and Adaptive NC Optimizer, which adjusts performance to the surrounding environment.

They also retain other established 1000X features, including call quality functions, connectivity options and battery life of up to 24 hours.

The second part of the announcement centres on colour rather than a new device platform. Sony has added Sandstone to the WH-1000XM6 lineup, taking the range to five colour options.

The move expands cosmetic choice on a model that already sits among Sony's best-known wireless noise-cancelling headphones. Sony described the new finish as natural and warm, while keeping the same audio specification as the existing WH-1000XM6 range.

Accessibility and materials

Sony also used the launch to highlight environmental and accessibility features in 1000X THE COLLEXION. About 25% of the plastic used in the product is made from recycled materials, and the packaging is plastic-free.

Accessibility features include a bag-style carry case with magnetic closure, clear left and right markings, tactile buttons and QR guides. According to Sony, the design was developed with users in mind, including people with low vision or limited hand mobility.

The launch reflects a familiar pattern in the premium headphone market, where brands are trying to distinguish new products not only through sound and noise cancelling, but also through materials, finish and wearability. Sony's decision to place a design-led model alongside a new colour variant suggests it is targeting both higher-end buyers and shoppers seeking more personalisation in an existing flagship line.

The 1000X series has been one of the more visible names in consumer audio since the original MDR-1000X, particularly in the wireless over-ear category, where noise cancelling, battery life and comfort have become the main battlegrounds. With 1000X THE COLLEXION, Sony is adding a more fashion-conscious take on that range while keeping much of the underlying technology from the WH-1000XM6.
