TP-Link opens Australian pre-orders for Wi-Fi 8 router

TP-Link has opened Australian pre-orders for the Archer 8 Ultra, its first Wi-Fi 8 router. Priced at AUD $1,499, it is available through Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Amazon Australia.

The launch brings one of the first consumer Wi-Fi 8 products to the Australian market. TP-Link says Australia is among the earliest markets to receive the router. The Archer 8 Ultra uses Broadcom's Wi-Fi 8 chipset and is built around the upcoming IEEE 802.11bn standard.

TP-Link is positioning the router for households seeking more stable wireless performance, not just higher peak speeds. Its Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine is designed to improve consistency across mid-to-long-range connections and in environments affected by interference.

According to TP-Link, the router can deliver up to 33% more throughput than Wi-Fi 7 at mid-to-long range and up to 24% more consistent throughput under interference. Those figures are based on the company's internal testing under controlled conditions.

At the centre of the hardware design is 19 Gbps of tri-band Wi-Fi 8. The router also includes two 10 Gbps auto-sensing WAN/LAN ports and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports for wired devices such as PCs and game consoles.

Inside the chassis are 18 antennas. TP-Link says the router is designed to cover up to 334 square metres and support as many as 200 devices. It also includes a Multi-Floor Mode that adjusts the signal pattern depending on whether devices are spread across several levels or concentrated on a single floor.

AI features

The Archer 8 Ultra also introduces TP-Link's Aireal AI Assistant through the Tether app. Users can ask the assistant questions about their home network, while the software runs automated functions in the background.

Those functions include channel selection through Wi-Fi Optimiser, issue resolution through Self-Healing, traffic prioritisation through Quality of Service, and reduced power consumption during quieter periods through ECO Mode. The router can also be paired with a phone over NFC during setup, and guests can connect the same way without entering a password.

Security features include a hardware-level VPN for selected devices, along with separate guest and Internet of Things networks. Users can also choose TP-Link's HomeShield service, which adds real-time protection, parental controls and WPA3 authentication.

Neville Wang, Managing Director, TP-Link Australia and New Zealand, said the product reflects a shift in focus for wireless networking.

"Wi-Fi 8 raises the bar for reliability, and Archer 8 Ultra takes it further," Wang said. "By pairing our Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine with intelligent antenna technology and AI-powered optimisation, we've created a smarter, more reliable network that's also easier to use. Australia is one of the first markets in the world to get it, so local households can make the move to Wi-Fi 8 from day one."

Retail push

The Australian pre-order campaign also includes a bundled incentive. Customers who buy the Archer 8 Ultra through those retailers will receive a free Tapo RV30 Max Plus Gen 2 robot vacuum and mop.

The offer helps position the router at the premium end of the consumer networking market, where vendors are trying to persuade buyers to upgrade from still relatively new Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 equipment. At AUD $1,499, the Archer 8 Ultra sits firmly in the upper tier of home networking products.

Wi-Fi 8 is still at an early stage of adoption, and parts of the standard are expected to evolve further. TP-Link says several functions, including Distributed Spatial Reuse, Enhanced Long Range, Dynamic Resource Unit allocation, Coordinated Time Division Multiple Access, Coordinated Spatial Reuse and Coordinated Beamforming, are planned for over-the-air software updates as the standard matures.

That means the router will launch with only part of its longer-term feature set. Later software releases are intended to expand support for denser multi-device environments, larger homes and networks using more than one access point.

For now, TP-Link is emphasising reliability and coverage as the main selling points for the first wave of Wi-Fi 8 hardware. The router also includes a new Wi-Fi 8 radio frequency chip with Range Boost to improve reception from distant low-power devices at the edge of coverage.

The Archer 8 Ultra is available for pre-order in Australia at an RRP of AUD $1,499, with a free Tapo RV30 Max Plus Gen 2 robot vacuum and mop included through Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Amazon Australia.
