OVHcloud unveils third data centre in Sydney with water cooling

Thu, 16th May 2024

OVHcloud, the European cloud provider, has unveiled its third data centre in Sydney, which is powered by the company's novel water cooling technology. This unveiling comes on the back of recent inaugurations in India and Singapore, making it a part of the company's six data centres network across Asia Pacific. The company is geared towards offering dependable, open and sovereign cloud solutions for businesses seeking to augment their reach in the region.

This innovative water cooling technology eradicates the requirement for air conditioning in server rooms and, as a result, brings about noteworthy reductions in costs and environmental impact. The water is cooled and circulated in a sealed loop that requires just a single glass of water to cool an OVHcloud server, highlighting the efficiency of the technology.

With this centre, OVHcloud is well-positioned to meet the burgeoning demand for high compute cloud solutions consistently and sustainably. This increasing need has been spurred on by the escalating infiltration of emergent technologies, especially in light of predictions that the global cloud services market is expected to hit US$2.5 trillion by 2031. To cater to this demand, OVHcloud's new data centre will avail its high-performance Scale dedicated servers that are powered by up-to-the-minute AMD and Intel processors. This will make innovation and high performance more accessible.

Michel Paulin, the CEO of OVHcloud said, "The increased popularity of emerging technologies such as 5G, edge computing and generative AI has triggered an influx of demand for high computing performance. However, many organisations grapple with balancing this need while considering their carbon footprint. As a pioneer in water cooling technology for more than 20 years, we are confident in our ability to assist organisations in not only powering their businesses but also achieving their ESG goals."

The new data centre also features low Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) of 0.18, indicating that OVHcloud is achieving remarkable sustainability metrics. This is further confirmed by the centre's Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) being as low as 1.29 and its Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) being 0.30l/kWh, far lower than industry averages.

Terry Maiolo, Vice President and General Manager for APAC region at OVHcloud, added, "We are excited to bring our latest data centre technology to Sydney, which deploys water cooling at scale and enables a sustainable cloud by design. With Australia being one of the most densely served economies by data centres per capita, this marks a pivotal development for Australian businesses as more organisations put the sustainability of data centres on their radar."
